Turquoise Statement Necklace

My obsession with turquoise just keeps growing. This gorgeous specimen was once a complete nugget but was too large and too heavy to wear, so I cut it in half.

Not only is this stone a beautiful sky blue, it also shows little hints of what I believe to be pyrite and calcite.

I have always heard that the most coveted turquoise has no matrix or inclusions. Well, I have to say that's not how I like mine. The more going on inside that stone, the better.

This large turquoise is set entirely in sterling silver with gallery wire and a feather bail to give the reverse side some visual interest. It has been oxidized slightly in order to bring out the texture and hangs from a vintage oxidized chain with a lobster claw clasp.

Turquoise was historically given as a symbol of friendship, and the recipient was said to be protected from negative energy and bodily harm. It is also the birthstone for December.
