Scarab Beetle Ring

I am obsessed with historical jewelry, one of my favorites time periods being the Egyptian era. A common motif seen in the jewelry at the time was the scarab beetle. Contrary to what the movie The Mummy would have you believe (still a favorite!), scarab beetles were highly revered as they were considered a sign of everlasting life, resurrection, and protection.

This ring is a reproduction I have made of a scarab beetle with its wings outstretched, ready to take flight. The detail in this piece is incredible, the wings are textured and you can even see its eyes. The scarab itself is crafted entirely from .999 pure silver (see below for the process). The ring shank is sterling silver and has been split at the top to provide balance and keep the ring from slipping side to side on your finger.

This unique scarab has been brought to life in the form of a wearable pure silver charm. The medium I use is known as Metal Clay and it consists of recycled silver from photo negatives in an organic binder. Once formed, it is fired in a kiln where the binder burns away and the piece that remains is .999 pure silver. I then oxidize (darken) it in order to bring out the texture, and in this case solder it to a sterling silver ring shank.
